Ecolighting Helped Man Truck & Bus Achieve Energy Savings Through Efficient and Improved Lighting Systems. MAN Truck & Bus UK offers a comprehensive range of commercial vehicles, buses, coaches and industrial engines to transport operators and companies in the UK.  It is an organisation committed to quality engineering and technological excellence at all times.

Already on the front foot in terms of improving the energy efficiency of the property portfolio, Property Manager Tracy Lister, who had previously engaged Ecolighting UK to assist with the upgrade of the lighting at Swindon HQ, awarded a multi-site contract to Energy-efficient lighting specialist EcolightingUK, to supply and install their energy saving light fittings into a total of ten of its wholly owned regional Branches.

The brief was to provide a full all inclusive project managed service from consultation to supply, fit and warranty, MAN Truck & Bus UK chose EcolightingUK as their preferred supplier & installer to best deliver their requirements.

The initial brief and aims of the project were as follows:-

  • Reduce energy usage, waste and cost;
  • Reduce on-going maintenance & repairs;
  • Improve the standard of lighting and increase welfare & working conditions;
  • Ensure continued long term Health & Safety;
  • Exceed the companies environmental commitment;
  • Utilise the current government backed tax efficient ECA scheme.
  • Identify other cost saving opportunities

The Specific lighting requirements for each MAN Truck & Bus UK site was as follows: To change completely all the existing inefficient light fittings; provide LED Fittings to the office and workshop areas and T5 Fluorescent fittings with PIR occupancy to all other areas; min 5 year warranty on all products; to exceed the CIBSE min light level requirements; full WEEE compliance.

For consistency, 5 key products were used throughout the implementation:-

PEGASUS LED Multibay – Workshop areas
APPOLLO  LED Tri-Proof – Workshop pits
TAURUS LED panel – Office areas
AQUARIUS & ATLANTIS Floodlights – External

Rico Group - Warranty

“The lighting has PIR sensors and further intelligence to check if the lighting level is sufficient and therefore won’t activate the lamps even though the PIR is triggered. The lamps automatically adjust every 10,000 hours (depending on use) and increase output to adapt to the degradation in the lamp over its lifetime. An additional benefit is that the system comes with a 10-year warranty, which is double that of all other suppliers.”

Keith Whitehead, Head of Strategic Development at Rico Group

James Gunn, Purchasing & Facilities Manager, calculated that these savings are expected to deliver approximately £200k P/A once installed.

A programme of works has been established with the installations across all the sites due for completion by the end of March  2016.

MAN Truck & Bus UK operates with a responsible commitment to the environment, and as part of this aims to reduce its energy usage on a year-by-year basis.

The sites will all benefit from significant energy savings, reduced carbon emissions, superior lighting levels, an enhanced working environment and improved health and safety, additionally reduced maintenance costs are also a huge benefit.

Steve Gardner, Director, commented,

“We are delighted to be working with MAN Truck & Bus UK on this project, the desire for lower energy bills is driving the demand for replacement lighting installations, particularly from larger companies that operate for long hours.

The light-emitting diode (LED) is one of today’s most energy-efficient and rapidly-developing lighting technologies. Good quality LEDs last longer, are more durable, and offer better light quality than traditional types of lighting, our LED range of lights fits just those criteria.

We look forward to continue working with MAN Truck & Bus UK on future energy saving projects.”
